I recently started proactively looking for content based websites to buy with the intention of improving them and either keeping them or selling them on. For someone with a background in search engine marketing, content publishing is a perfect fit and acquiring a site that’s done a lot of the hard work already means that improvements can be made relatively quickly.
After a long search and hundreds of website owners contacted, I eventually found a site in the DIY space that had been offline for nearly a year. The domain is very well aged and just celebrated it’s 21st birthday (fantastic from an SEO POV), it has links from the BBC and national newspapers and most importantly, the content was spot on (and the previous owner allowed me to use it).
Unfortunately, transferring the original site files was almost impossible so all of the content needed to be recovered from archive.org which was a hugely time consuming process and took the best part of 3 months. But slowly the content is being recovered, new content is being added and the technical elements of the site are being addressed.
Traffic was slow to pick up at first as everything settled down but it’s starting to grow quite nicely now, especially over the last couple of months. With it being a DIY site I think Covid has helped as more people are searching for DIY related stuff.
You can see the traffic increasing since March with September being the best so far with just over 1700 visits. The site used to attract somewhere in the region of 30,000 visits per month and that’s the target I’m looking to get back to.
In terms of monetisation, I’m trying to get another AdSense account but I keep getting a message telling me they’re not accepting new applications at the moment because of reduced staff (Covid again), so I’m looking at some alternatives. Some in-content ads and affiliate links should be enough to cover costs at this stage and will hopefully be enough to fund some fresh content as well.
Once the site is self sufficient and funding it’s own growth, I’ll look for similar opportunities in different niches. We had a baby last year which has been a huge learning curve for me and the wife so a baby/parenting blog would be a good fit.
I’ll post more updates as the site progresses! You can check out the site here: diyfixit.co.uk
